The surfin' and turfin' history
As long as humans have been around, we've been looking to both the ocean and land to create the perfect recipes and eat the most delicious meals. However, it wasn't until the 1960's that the official pairing of the two was coined as a dish. It seems the phrase Surf and Turf actually came from around 1939, on the East and West coasts of America, to describe and market general beach-related activities and paraphernalia. During the 1960's, this phrase was first used to refer to seafood and meat combination dishes along these coasts, with lobster and steak being the most popular pairing. Whether it originated on the East or West coast is up for debate, with there being evidence on either side, but what we do know is that the popularity of the dish soared, and variations on this decadent recipe have flooded the culinary world.
For our Surf and Turf recipe, we wanted your special feline to enjoy the best of the best, so we combined our super yummy and protein packed Chicken Mousse and Salmon Mousse meals. This variety pack is simply bursting with easy digestion and energising flavour (psst...check out our recent post on our top 10 kitty superfoods for more information on the health benefits of our meals).
This (human) recipe below uses fillet steak and prawns, as we wanted all the fanciness of the classic Surf and Turf steak and lobster, but with more accessible ingredients. These gems from the land and sea pack this meal with with essential vitamins and a tasty kick - hopefully leaving you with shiny fur and a happy tummy, just like your cat.
Ingredients
2 fillet steaks
12 medium prawns, peeled and de-veined
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp butter, melted
1 clove of garlic, minced
1 tsp steak seasoning
1 tsp seafood seasoning
1 tsp dried parsley
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tbsp white wine
1/2 a small onion
Instructions
1) Finely mince your onion, and pop into a bowl. Then, add your melted butter, white wine, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, parsley, seafood seasoning, garlic, half your olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste, before adding in the prawns and tossing to coat. Cover this with cling-film and pop in the fridge to marinate for at least 15 minutes, but the longer the better.
2) If cooking outdoors, heat your grill to medium-high and lightly oil the grate. If cooking indoors, heat a cast iron skillet to medium-high and lightly oil the pan, or turn your oven grill to medium-high.
3) Coat your steaks with the remaining oil before sprinkling them with your steak seasoning and salt and pepper to taste. Cook your steaks for around 5 minutes each side, or until starting to firm and slightly pink in the centre. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm.
4) Remove your prawns from the marinade, and grill for around 2 minutes on each side or until they are bright pink.
5) Serve with mashed or new potatoes, plenty of hot melted butter, and/or steamed greens. Enjoy!
