Nothing makes a splash like a yummy and comforting Fisherman's Pie seafood recipe, for both dogs and humans alike. At Tilly and Ted, we think your pet deserves a seat at the table, and as such, all our pet foods are designed after dishes you could enjoy alongside your furry friend. They're so tantalisingly tasty, that you could (almost) eat them too.

Although we wouldn’t recommend eating your dog’s food at the best of times, there’s nothing to make your pet feel part of the family than sharing a meal all together. Take a look at the mouth-watering recipe below for a fresh and fabulous Fisherman's Pie: best enjoyed alongside your waggy bestie whilst they tuck into our new Fisherman's Pie pup recipe, designed with their enjoyment and health at its core.

Life truly is the bubbles!

Fish-story

Fish pie in all forms has secured its spot as a staple meal of British cuisine, capturing a warm and hearty Winter's night. If you're a seafood fan, there's no doubt you've enjoyed many different twists and variations on this classic dish involving different seafoods, from prawns, to cod, to perhaps even jellyfish. Fish pies have popped up through many tales and traditions throughout history, however the origins of the humble fish pie are not too clear: some say it originated in 55BC in Rome, after Julius Caesar's expedition over to our shores. Religion has also played into a fishy Friday tradition, with fish being consumed on Fridays for Venus, the Roman god of love, or for the celebration of Good Friday. Nowadays, who doesn't love a good fish and chips at the end of every week.

For our Tilly & Ted Fisherman's Pie recipe, we wanted your special canine to enjoy the best of the best, so chose to combine both fish and seaweed for our recipe. These superfoods are packed with many Amino Acids and Omegas, for easy digestion and that energising zing (psst...check out our recent post on our top 10 doggy superfoods, for more information on the health benefits of our meals).

This (human) recipe below uses both fish and seaweed, just like our Fisherman's Pie dog food. It’s packed with essential vitamins and a tasty kick - hopefully leaving you with a shiny coat and happy tummy, just like your pup.

Ingredients

Smoked haddock

Cod

400ml milk

3 tbsp kombu seaweed

1 tbsp olive oil

50g butter

50g flour

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves of garlic, crushed

125ml cream

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Juice of ½ lemon

1 tbsp chopped dill

2 tbsp chopped parsley

4 tsp of seaweed seasoning

800g potatoes, peeled

Fisherman's pie recipe with a hungry bite taken

Instructions

1) Set your oven to 180C fan.

2) Place your fish in a large oven-proof dish and sprinkle with 1 ½ tbsp of kombu seaweed, before covering with the milk. Put this in the oven for 15 minutes to lightly poach. Afterwards, drain the milk into a bowl to save for later.

3) Once cool enough to handle, flake the fish into bite-size pieces with your fingers, and discard the skin.

4) Put your peeled potatoes into a large saucepan of boiling water, and cook until soft enough to mash. Continue with step 5 whilst your potatoes are boiling.

5) In a large pan, fry the onion and garlic in the oil and butter on a low heat until soft. After this, stir in the flour and the remaining kombu seaweed to make a roux. Slowly add the warm poaching milk you saved earlier, whilst continuing to stir. Finally, pour in the cream, mustard, lemon juice, and herbs. Season to taste with kombu, salt, and pepper.

6) Pour the sauce all over your flaked fish in its oven-proof dish.

7) Mash your boiled potatoes with the butter and shony seasoning, before spreading them over the top of the fish.

8) Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes, until it is golden and bubbling.
