Enjoy spooky season! Our favourite Halloween films with cats
Nothing makes a spooky film better than the addition of a furry friend! Check out this list of our favourite Halloween movies featuring cats, from purring heroes, to hissing villains.
With the falling leaves and brisk winds, it seems autumn is well and truly here. With spooky season fast approaching, it's the perfect time to cosy up with your best fluffy friends, and watch some seasonal movies to get into the spirit of things. Our favourite spooky films are, of course, the ones with furrier heroes and villains, perfect for watching alongside your pussycats and pets. From family-friendly fun, to hair-raising horror, here are our favourite Halloween movies featuring cats, as well as which human and kitty snacks would go best with each flick.
Grab your blankets and dim the lights, this first Halloween film is a family-friendly classic that everyone can enjoy.
Hocus Pocus
This film is a beloved classic for a reason: it combines a curious mystery with all the charm and comedy of spooky season. 'Hocus Pocus' follows the story of children moving to Salem, and the scary hi-jinxes they encounter with three wicked witches. Halloween themed romps are guaranteed with this feel-good flick, so it's perfect for watching with the family, or for a light and fun watch if you're not a horror fan. A stand-out character is none other than Thackery-Binx, the hilarious human-turned-cat, who charms the audience with his wit and story. This film is rated PG, so use your own guidance as it could be scary for young children.
We think a delicious snack of toffee apples is the perfect way to enjoy this movie. Creating these sticky treats is a wonderful family activity to do together, before you sit down to enjoy your hard-work with a matching movie. For your cats, we suggest a yummy bowl of our Chicken with Beef Chunks, as it's perfect for hearty kittens looking for an adventure this spooky season.
If you fancy something a little more scary, check out our next horror movie featuring one of the most terrifying cats in cinema history.
Pet Semetary
This one is definitely not your family-friendly kitty romp. 'Pet Semetary' is a horrifying tale about resurrected pets stalking people after rising from their graves. After moving to a new town, the film follows a family who mourn the recent death of their cat, Church, and bury him in a local Indian burial ground. However, this proves to be a fatal mistake when Church reappears, mangled and evil... This 1989 cult classic adapts Stephen King's 1983 horror novel into a Halloween favourite, loved by many for its spooky themes and furry villains. This film is perfect if you want to watch something on the scarier side, that's still good fun and not too gory. This movie is rated 18, so could be one for you to watch with friends for some campy horror to celebrate the season.
Chocolate brownies are the obvious choice for this film, as they are dark and indulgent, whilst still satisfying your sweet tooth. For your kitties, we recommend our Chicken Casserole to give them a meaty treat, something we think could chill out even Church himself.
Up next, we're veering away from horror, and heading back to the fun and accessible spooky adventures. This easy movie is bound to be enjoyed by the whole family.
Room on the Broom
This is a no-brainer for families with younger children, as the whimsical story and fun rhymes are entertaining for all. Based on the 2001 book by Julia Donaldson, this 2012 film tells the story of a witch and her cat best friend, who meet a collection of animals along their travels. This film is a short one at only 25 minutes, so suits younger children well due to the runtime and simple themes. This is of course rated U, and is perfect for all to enjoy together. Ultimately, this film is a British Halloween classic, that utilises some recognisable voice talents to tell this endearing story in a striking visual medium.
Our movie snack of choice here is hot chocolate, complete with whipped cream and marshmallows. This sweet and simple film deserves a snack that matches this vibe, and gives you a warm feeling afterwards. For your cat, we're recommending our Chicken with Salmon Delight meal. These yummy bites are a delicious source of protein, and fuel every kitten on their spooky travels.
Let's tip the spooky scales again, and look at another super scary horror film. This one is definitely for after the kids have gone to bed.
Alien
Ridley Scott's iconic 1979 film 'Alien' is loved by horror buffs everywhere for its terrifying score, and intricate practical effects. One of the stand-out characters, alongside Ellen Ripley, is her fearless cat, Jones. We don't want to spoil this captivating story, but we can guarantee it will have you on the edge of your seat and holding your kitties close. So, if you want proper horror for your Halloween, this is our top fur-raising pick for you. This movie is rated 18, so one for adults-only this time. Combining body-horror, sci-fi, and survival horror, this film carries its themes well, and will keep you sleeping with one eye-open throughout Autumn.
The music and silence makes this film as terrifying as it is, so we're suggesting popcorn as the ultimate movie snack. The crunchy treat will make the tense mood even tenser, so is great to heighten the horror. Your cat pals will love a bowl of our Chicken with Carrot Pâté for this spooky flick, as this meal keeps kitties coming back for more just like the 'Alien' movies.
Rounding off our list is another film of cartoon fun, that follows a mysterious cat who creates more questions than he answers.
Coraline
Directed by Henry Selick, this animated Halloween film is rated highly by many for its fun and truly spooky story. 'Coraline' is all about a young girl longing for a more exciting life, and the consequences that come from getting what you wished for. This movie utilises the classic stop-motion style of Selick's other projects, and features The Cat, a feline enigma who helps our protagonist throughout the film. This movie will have you mesmerised alongside your furry best friend, as it truly captures audiences of children and adults alike. It is rated PG due to slightly spooky themes and action, so use your guidance before sitting down with your youngest here.
Halloween cookies are the perfect choice, as you can spend the day making them for with your family, and can customise them with all sorts of flavours. You can even create some tasty cookies for your kitty too, check out our recipes for cat-friendly baking here. The best meal for your fluffy bestie is going to be our Salmon Traybake, as just like 'Coraline', it's light and satisfying whilst providing a unique flavour.
